Brixton temporary move approved and Streatham Ice Rinks 80th birthday

Despite opposition from skating groups, The Mayor of London, Sport England and Brixton locals, the provision of a temporary ice rink on the site of the Popes Road multi-story car park was approved in a council meeting on the 2nd February 2011. In addition a change was made to an existing condition that a new ice rink had to be built and operational in Streatham BEFORE the current Ice rink could be demolished. This change paves the way for a temporary ice rink in Brixton and for the current rink, which turned 80 this month, to be demolished.

For those interested, there is an excellent edited audio recording of the council meeting here . It condenses the 7 hour-long meeting into less than an hour.

And the official Lambeth council minutes are here which unfortunately omit many of the promises made to the Werewolves at the meeting to address concerns related to parking at the temporary ice rink.

After the Werewolves training session on the 2nd March, the Ice Rinks 80th birthday,  many of the Werewolves, Parents and other skaters staged a protest at the changes which will force them to relocate to Brixton and accept the risk, however small it may or not be, of a suitable ice rink ever returning to Streatham.

The protest was also covered in the local media

Some pictures of the protest are shown below.

Work to demolish the Popes road car park in Brixton to make way for the temporary ice facility have started. There are some excellent photos here.
